Who can rent a kayak?
Our kayak rental in Oslo is designed for paddlers who already have previous kayaking experience.
To rent a kayak from Mad Goats, you must know how to rescue yourself and others and feel confident paddling independently. If you do not know how to perform a kayak rescue, or do not have enough experience to rent a kayak safely, we ask that you do not book a self-service rental.
Instead, we recommend joining one of our guided kayak tours in Oslo or signing up for our 3-hour beginner kayak course (Våttkort). That way, you can still get out on the water safely while building your skills and confidence.
Unless you are an experienced paddler and know how to self-rescue, we also recommend that you do not paddle alone.

Winter kayak rental in Oslo
We offer kayak rental in Oslo all year around, but winter paddling requires more experience, the right equipment, and careful judgement.
If you are renting a kayak during November to March, you must wear your own drysuit, paddle with at least one other person, have at least 2 years of kayaking experience, and hold a Norwegian Våttkort or equivalent qualification such as a Svensk paddelpass, Euro Paddle Pass, or another similar certificate.
If you do not have enough experience for winter kayak rental in Oslo, we recommend joining our guided Oslo Fjord kayak tour from Tjuvholmen instead.
Weather and paddling conditions
Before heading out, always check the weather and conditions on the fjord. You can check the weather here on yr.no
If the wind speed is above 5 m/s, we recommend staying close to land and paddling in sheltered areas. If the wind speed is above 8 m/s, you should not paddle on the fjord.
If the conditions are not suitable for safe paddling and the wind speed is above 8 m/s, we are happy to give you a voucher so you can rebook your kayak rental in Oslo for another day. Just email your booking reference to kontakt@madgoats.no.
